From Dr. Fred Grosse, President, Elon Homes for
Children:
“ Elon Homes for Children, Inc., is very pleased
to have received the gifts of tile and tile installation
from
Tile Partners for Humanity. Our dream to offer safe and
affordable housing to children over age 18 is coming
true on our Charlotte campus. The tile and donated installation
in the kitchen, dining area, bathrooms, entry and laundry
areas are a wonderful addition to the houses. Children
with no family and no place to live will now enjoy and
appreciate this fine addition to their home. Over the
years, we hope that dozens of children will call these
two Habitat houses their home and they will all be told
the story of all the volunteers, including Tile Partners
for Humanity, who made it possible for them.”

Partners provided floor tile and installation
for two Habitat for Humanity homes built in conjunction
with Elon Homes for Children of Charlotte, NC. This
build was different from a traditional Habitat for
Humanity project, where a single family purchases the
home from Habitat. Elon Homes offers stability and,
in some cases, emergency shelter to children deemed “wards
of the state” with programs designed to foster
protection for the children. Once the children reach
18 years of age, there is no longer state funding to
care for them. These children will be able to rent
rooms in these two homes while they either work or
go to school. During that time, they will find a job
and other place to live. When they leave the home,
Elon will return the rent paid, providing that child
with money to start a new job or educational program.
Crossville Tile and Stone and Dal-tile 221, both
of Charlotte, donated 400 square feet apiece for
the project.
Charlotte-based National Gypsum Corporation donated
50 pieces of Permabase. LATICRETE International, Inc.,
donated setting materials for the entire project, including
rapid setting thinset, grout, and an anti-microbial
additive for the grout. NATTCO donated two buckets
of tile tools. John Elliott of Bonitz Flooring helped
to coordinate the labor, donating two days of his own
time to help install the tile. Charlotte-based Tops & Tiles,
Inc., and its owner, John Theysohn, donated an eight-man
crew for the full day for the project. Rusty Repass
of Bonitz Flooring, Jamie Beck of Daltile 221, and
James Mounce of LATICRETE also donated a day of labor.
From Bert Green, Executive Director of Habitat for
Humanity of Charlotte:
“
We’re tickled to death to have tile in our
homes. What stands out is the quality it adds to
the homes as well as the level of workmanship and
pride these folks put into the project. We’re
honored and blessed that they chose to share their
talents with us. The durability of this product is
incredible, and the colors that were made available
to us for this project are fantastic.”
